A mattress trial lets you evaluate comfort at home, but the seller's return terms decide what happens if it does not suit you. Before buying, check the deadline, any waiting period, the refund amount and who arranges collection. A long trial is less useful if its return costs or exclusions make it difficult to use.

Trial policies differ: two examples

As checked on September 5, 2026, Saatva's mattress trial policy lists 365 nights, no mandatory minimum trial period and a $99 pickup processing fee for a return. Its adjustable bases are excluded from returns and exchanges. Buying a mattress and a base together does not mean both have the same protection.

Casper's trial page describes a 100-night mattress trial with a 30-night adjustment period before a return pickup can be arranged. These examples show why you should read your particular seller's terms instead of assuming every trial is free or has the same waiting period. Policies can change; save the terms that apply to your order.

Make a return checklist before ordering

Ask the seller to confirm these points in writing:

  • When does the trial begin: purchase, shipment or delivery?
  • Must you request a return by the deadline, or must collection also be completed?
  • Is a refund available, or only an exchange or store credit?
  • Which costs are deducted, including collection or original delivery charges?
  • Do bundle discounts change the amount refunded for one returned item?
  • Are there restrictions on condition, location, clearance stock or repeat returns?
  • Does an exchange restart the clock or use the time remaining?

If you buy through another retailer, check that retailer's policy. Do not assume a manufacturer's direct-sales trial applies to every purchase channel.

Use the trial to answer a few practical questions

Keep your usual bedding and sleep routine reasonably consistent so you can identify what changed. Note whether turning over feels easy, whether either partner is disturbed by movement and whether the mattress feels comfortable in your normal sleeping positions. Record observations rather than relying on your memory of the first night.

Check that your foundation meets the mattress maker's requirements. Follow the care instructions and protect the mattress against spills. If discomfort is worsening, contact the seller about your options; a stated adjustment period is not a reason to ignore pain.

If you decide to return it

Contact the seller before the deadline and keep the request confirmation. Ask who books pickup, whether packaging is required, what proof of collection you receive and when the refund should arrive. Do not donate or discard the mattress without written instructions from the seller. Set a reminder to follow up if collection or payment is delayed.

A trial helps you judge present-day comfort. It does not establish long-term durability, and a warranty handles different questions. Read both policies separately before committing. For factors outside the mattress itself, our sleep-quality guide covers routines and the bedroom environment.
